Inaugural Session of the Science Communication Winter 2016 Lunch and Learn Series

This winter, the Climate Change Secretariat and the Government of Yukon's Science Community of Practice (SCOPe) has organized a series of professional development sessions on science communication. This series includes six lunch-hour sessions between January and April, where local or national presenters will share knowledge, skills and experience with Yukoners and Yukon government staff. This initiative aims to highlight interesting issues and best practices in science communication and engagement, allowing the audience to learn from the experience and expertise of presenters. The inaugural session will be held at Yukon College tomorrow (Jan 21st) at 11:30 am. The panel will feature local experts who will discuss issues related to engaging First Nation Communities in scientific research.

Description: On Thursday, January 21st, Yukon government’s Science Community of Practice (SCOPe) will hold the inaugural session in a six-part series on the topic of science communication and engagement. This panel discussion on “Engaging First Nation communities in scientific research: lessons for successful and meaningful collaboration”, will see four presenters from First Nations, research, and government organizations discuss challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned for successful and meaningful collaboration with First Nations. Speakers include:

  • David Silas, First Nations Engagement Advisor with the Yukon Research Centre
  • Brendan Hanley, Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer
  • Bob Van Dijken, Director of Circumpolar Relations with the Council of Yukon First Nations
  • Norma Kassi, Director of First Nations Engagement with the Arctic Institute for Community Based Research

The event will be held at 11:30am at Yukon College’s Presidents’ Boardroom, and will feature brief presentations by the four panelists, followed by an audience Q&A session
